Useful Information for Cruise Passengers
Port of Ravenna – Porto Corsini
The port of Ravenna is named Porto Corsini in honor of Pope Clement XII (born Lorenzo Corsini).
The origin of the name is linked to major hydraulic works undertaken in the early 18th century on the initiative of Cardinal Alberoni. Originally, Ravenna was located directly on the coast, but over time, due to silting of canals and changes in the coastline, the city gradually became farther from the sea.
To restore the connection with the Adriatic Sea, a new deep canal was excavated in 1738 (finally opened in 1748). The canal and later the port were named after the reigning pontiff at the time, Pope Clement XII, of the Corsini family. The name Porto Corsini thus honors the Corsini family and their role in the revival of the port of Ravenna.
