Gradara Castle: legends, love, and timeless charm
Gradara Castle is one of the most fascinating sites in the Marche region. Located just 30 kilometers south of Rimini, it stands proudly on a scenic hill. Its walls and towers are perfectly preserved. As a result, walking through the village feels like stepping back into the 13th century. If you’re looking for history, romance, and stunning views, Gradara is the place to go.
The tragic love story of Paolo and Francesca
In 1285, a famous tragedy took place inside the castle walls. Giovanni Malatesta, lord of Pesaro, caught his wife, Francesca da Rimini, in a secret affair. Her lover was his own brother, Paolo.
In a fit of jealousy, Giovanni killed them both. This shocking event could have been forgotten. However, Dante Alighieri gave it eternal life in literature.
While exiled in Ravenna, Dante heard the story from Francesca’s father, Guido da Polenta. Deeply moved, he included the lovers in his Divine Comedy. Therefore, Paolo and Francesca live forever in the second circle of Hell, blown by endless winds of passion.
Lucrezia Borgia and her years in Gradara
Two centuries later, Lucrezia Borgia stayed in Gradara. She was the daughter of Pope Alexander VI. At just 14, she was married to Giovanni Sforza for political reasons.
She lived in the castle for about three years. During that time, the castle became a place of political intrigue and family tension. In fact, her presence added new layers of mystery to Gradara’s already rich past.
A castle frozen in time
The central tower, called the Mastio, rises above the castle walls. From there, visitors enjoy breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea and rolling hills.
Moreover, the walkway along the battlements offers a unique way to experience the medieval atmosphere. Throughout the year, the village hosts historical events, medieval fairs, and reenactments.
